Bhartiya Janata Party and It's Freedom of Religion.


India is a secular country that guarantees freedom of religion to all its citizens. However, in recent years, there has been a growing concern over the threat to religious freedom in the country, with the ruling party, the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP), often being accused of promoting a Hindu nationalist agenda that marginalizes religious minorities.



The BJP, which came to power in 2014, has been accused of stoking communal tensions in the country, particularly against Muslims. There have been several instances of violence against Muslims, with many of these incidents being attributed to members of right-wing Hindu groups that are said to be affiliated with the BJP.


One of the most controversial moves by the BJP government was the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), which was passed in 2019. The CAA provides a path to citizenship for refugees from neighboring countries, but only for non-Muslims. This has been widely criticized as being discriminatory against Muslims and a violation of the secular principles enshrined in the Indian constitution.

Another issue that has been raised is the so-called "love jihad" laws that have been passed by several BJP-ruled states. These laws aim to prevent forced religious conversions by imposing strict penalties on those found guilty of such offenses. However, critics argue that these laws are being used to target interfaith couples and are a violation of the freedom of religion.

The BJP has also been accused of using its power to suppress dissenting voices. Journalists, activists, and academics who have spoken out against the government have been arrested or harassed, with many accusing the BJP of trying to silence criticism.

Despite these criticisms, the BJP maintains that it is committed to protecting the freedom of religion in the country. In a speech in 2019, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that India's diversity was its strength and that the country's constitution guaranteed the freedom of religion to all citizens.

However, the actions of the BJP government have caused concern among many, with some accusing the party of trying to push a Hindu nationalist agenda at the expense of religious minorities. It remains to be seen how the situation will evolve in the coming years, but it is clear that the issue of religious freedom in India is a complex and sensitive one that requires careful consideration and action.
